IELTS 8 BAND VOCABULARY :USEFUL IDIOMS FOR IELTS WRITING AND SPEAKING



The usage of spectacular vocabulary gives you an edge over other candidates, especially in speaking. Continuous use of comprehensive vocabulary built the optimum impression on the examiner's mind. Today I share some eye-catching vocabulary with my audience, which will help them to score high grades in their IELTS exams.

                Phrases:                                  MEANING

           1)      Under the weather:     a little sick or don’t feel well.

     Sentence:

    I went home early yesterday because I was a a bit under the weather.

           2)      Under the microscope:    to be watched carefully

    Sentence:

    After the recent mistakes at work, he’s currently under the microscope.

            3)      To get under the one skin:  to get upset, to get bothered, to get irritated

    Sentence:

   Her unpleasant voice gets under my skin.

     4) To come under the fire: To be criticized severely

    Sentence:

    You will definitely come under the fire, if the boss notices your mistakes.

    5) To throw someone under the bus: get betrayed by someone for his/her own personal benefits,    especially at work.

Sentence:

He was shocked that his colleague throws him under the bus.

6) Under one’s breath: To speak to our self, which is inaudible to others.

Sentence:

“I wish I could go home” I said this under the breath, in front of my boss.


7) Right under the nose: Clearly Visible

Sentence:

The CEO of the company could not believe that his employee stealing the money under his nose.

8) Under the gun: pressure to do something in a specific duration, or under a deadline.

Sentence:

I am under the gun to complete a few projects in a week.

9) To sweep it under the rag: To hide or avoid something bad, ignore something difficult.

Sentence:

Removal of an affected pelvic is disappointing for a woman, but we can’t just sweep it under the rag and pretend it doesn’t happen.

10) Under the Influence:  Drinking alcohol, drunk.

Sentence:

He got arrested for driving under the influence.
